By: Joe Strupp Ken Paulson, editor of USA Today, and Susan Goldberg, editor of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, were elected to leadership positions in the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

ASNE's board of directors made the appointments during their fall board meeting on Oct. 17, in Orlando, Fla., according to a release.

Paulson will immediately fill the position of treasurer, which was vacated by Caesar Andrews. That appointment puts him on track to become ASNE president in 2011.

Goldberg, meanwhile, will take the treasurer role at the April 2009 meeting in Chicago, and be in position to become ASNE president in 2012.

"At a time when America's newspapers face unprecedented challenges, ASNE's commitment to the highest professional standards, diversity and the First Amendment has never been more important," Paulson said in a statement. "I'm honored to be able to play a role in building on that tradition of public service and professionalism."

Added Goldberg, "I'm honored to take on a leadership role in ASNE during a time of great challenge and change in our industry. As editors, it is our duty and privilege to help reinvent the future of news and information, and I believe ASNE can play a key part of preserving and protecting our strongest journalism for generations of readers and viewers. I look forward to working with and learning from talented editors around the country."
