Kentucky Paper Plans $12 Million Upgrade

By: The Paducah Sun is investing $12 million in its downtown operation, starting with a new $10 million printing plant.

Publisher Jim Paxton said the new plant will allow the Sun to get papers out more quickly with crisper images and typefaces and much more color. "It should mean a better product all around," he said. "It's kind of the difference between a black-and-white and color TV."

Construction of the printing building is tentatively scheduled to start in March and be completed by late 2007. The cost includes more than $8 million for a new press and other distribution refinements.

This is by far the largest single capital project ever done Paxton Media Group and one of the largest private investments downtown, Paxton said.

Paxton said the building is the first of two phases of capital upgrades over the next two years. A $2 million renovation of the Sun building at 408 Kentucky Ave. is planned for 2008, subject to board approval and assuming no major economic changes, he said.
