Celebrating its 50th year, Nation Media Group Ltd., Nairobi, Kenya, is adding another four-high tower to the already-extended KBA Comet press it commissioned in 1997. The latest addition is expected to be ready at year's end.
The Comet will have a maximum web width of 33 inches and a 22.75-inch cut-off. The newly extended press line will comprise 12 reelstands, 56 printing couples (six four-high and two two-high towers) and two jaw folders, controlled from KBA ErgoTronic consoles with a remote diagnostics link and able to produce up to 96 broadsheet or 192 tabloid pages, half of which can be in full color.
Nation Media Group has expanded from its print business into television, radio, the Internet and logistics. Its Africa Review digital news platform was the country's first. The group also holds majority stakes in Uganda's Monitor Publications (Daily Monitor, Sunday Monitor) and Tanzania's Mwananchi Communications (Mwananchi, Mwana Spoti, The Citizen).
Besides the top-selling Daily Nation (200,000 copies), the Comet prints The East African (distributed in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda), The Business Daily, and the Swahili daily Taifa Leo and weekly Taifa Jumapili, as well as many supplements and contract work.
