By: E&P Staff The winners of the Knight Community Information Challenge have been revealed. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation grants are part of a five-year, $24 million initiative to support creative uses of new media and technologies.
The projects, which received the grants, include the following:
*A hyperlocal news site staffed by professional journalists and citizens in five Connecticut towns that have lost their newspaper and local radio station.
*"Story-stations" in underserved communities in San Diego, including the region's Indian reservations, spearheaded by the VoiceOfSanDiego.com.
* A statewide competition in Minnesota to come up with the best solutions to community problems in conjunction with Minnesota Public Radio.
"At Knight Foundation, we firmly believe that you cannot effectively manage the affairs of a community in a democracy without the free flow of information," Alberto Ibarg?en, president and CEO, said in a statement. "Our goal at Knight is informed and engaged communities. Community foundations were established to meet core community needs, so they are logical partners."
The Information Challenge is a matching program to encourage community foundations to fund information projects. To help communities identify opportunities, Knight created teams of "circuit riders" -- expert specialists who offer access to resources. Additionally, Knight is hosting along with the Council on Foundations, its second Media Learning Seminar in Miami on Feb. 16-17.
