Knight Foundation Gives $10 Mil. for Training

By: Joe Strupp The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation on Wednesday announced $10 million in grants that will boost training for journalists and spearhead new investment in mid-career education and development through several new and expanded programs.

The grants were announced during the American Society of Newspaper Editors conference being held here.

Funding will include: $2.8 million for the Poynter Institute to develop a Web-based learning center, $2 million for the Committee of Concerned Journalists to expand its traveling curriculum, and $600,000 for the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association to continue its traveling training program.

Other grants will go to the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, ASNE, the American Press Institute, and the Associated Press Managing Editors.
