Knight News Challenge Launches Online 'Garage'

Posted
By: E&P Staff The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation signed on 50 coaches to help mentor applicants at the Knight News Challenge, with the hope of attracting a more diverse range of ideas. The coaches are past jurors and winners.

The coaches are made available through an online "garage", which will give people a place to collaborate and look for staff through a job board.

"With this incubator site we are taking a page from technology companies," Gary Kebbel, the Knight Foundation's journalism program director, said in a statement. "We hope that the Garage coaches will extend the contest's reach beyond the journalism field. We want to attract more applicants from technical communities, such as the social media arena. Another goal is to improve the overall quality of applications."

The Knight News Challenge will start accepting applications on Sept. 2, with a deadline of Nov. 1. Last year, 3,000 contestants put their hat in the ring; 16 were named winners, and announced at the E&P/Mediaweek Interactive Conference in May.
