By: E&P Staff Knight Ridder reported today that advertising revenue in May was up 3.3% on a pro forma basis.
Retail advertising revenue grew 4.5%. National advertising revenue declined 6.8%. Classified revenue advanced 5.7%. Within the classified category, help wanted and real estate were both up 12.2% and 20.5%, respectively. Auto fell 10.6%.
?May was a strong month, with four large markets performing particularly well,? Tony Ridder, chairman and CEO, said in a statement. ?In total advertising, Contra Costa was up 13,8%, Fort Worth was up 6.3%, Miami was up 5%, and St. Paul was up 4.2%.?
Ridder also said the retail category turned in its best performance for the year. Philadelphia and Kansas City gained in retail, up 6.3% and 4.9% respectively. Miami was up 6.9% and Fort Worth increased 8.9%.
National was down 4.4% in Philadelphia and 16.1% in Kansas City. The category grew in San Jose, up 9.3% and in Charlotte, up 6.2%.
Classified increased in five out of nine large markets: Miami, San Jose, Fort Worth, Contra Costa, and St. Paul. Philadelphia and Charlotte experienced declines.
?The total advertising revenue at the 20 newspapers that will be retained by McClatchy in the upcoming sale was up 4.1% in May,? Ridder said. ?Total advertising for the remaining 12 papers was up 2.2%.?
Circulation revenue was down 1.5%.
