By: E&P Staff Knight Ridder has acquired Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, which owns eight free weeklies in California with a combined circulation of 157,000. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We believe strongly in the importance of community journalism, which we know is highly valued by readers," Hilary Schneider, senior vice president at Knight Ridder, said in a statement. "This group of tightly zoned weeklies will help us extend our coverage of micro-communities in the Bay Area."
Silicon Valley Community Newspapers publishes the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, Saratoga News, Cupertino Courier, Sunnyvale Sun, Campbell Reporter, Willow Glen Resident, Rose Garden Resident, and Almaden Resident. The group also includes the San Jose City Times, a legal newspaper, and the glossy publication Image.
David Cohen, publisher and CEO of Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, will continue to manage and operate the publications under Knight Ridder. He will report to Greg Goff, general manager/targeted publications.
"With the resources of Knight Ridder, we will be able to fulfill our vision of brining our brand of community journalism to a greater audience," Cohen said in a statement.
