By: (AP) The top executive of Knight Ridder, one of the country's largest newspaper publishers, collected a bonus of $802,825 last year, according to a proxy filed Tuesday.
None of the company's executives received a bonus in 2001, the filing said.
P. Anthony Ridder, chairman and CEO of Knight Ridder, was paid a salary of $940,500 in 2002, a slight increase over last year's annual paycheck of $935,720, the filing said.
The San Jose, Calif.-based company granted its chief executive 175,000 options in 2002, compared with 150,000 in 2001.
Knight Ridder publishes 32 daily and 25 non-daily newspapers across the United States, including such heavyweights as the
Detroit Free Press, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and
The Miami Herald. A pioneer in online news, the company also operates a number of Web sites.
Shares of Knight Ridder were at $61.50 early Tuesday afternoon, up 93 cents, or 1.5%, on the New York Stock Exchange.
