Knight Ridder Digital Posts Strongest Quarter Ever

By: Ann M. Mack (Adweek IQ) The New York Times Co. last week reported that third-quarter revenue for its Web properties, which include NYTimes.com and Boston.com, rose nearly 20% to $21.8 million from $18.2 million in the same period a year earlier.

Operating profit for New York Times Digital more than doubled to a record $5.7 million from the $2.8 million in the year-ago quarter. Q3 revenue was flat with Q2's $21.6 million, while operating profit was up 33% from $4.3 million in the second quarter.

The New York-based online unit of The New York Times Co. attributed the boost to higher advertising revenue resulting from increased volume.

Meanwhile, Knight Ridder said that its Internet operation posted its strongest quarter ever. Knight Ridder Digital, which develops and manages the newspaper publisher's Web sites including the Akron Beacon Journal's Ohio.com and the Lexington Herald-Leader's Kentucky.com, recorded third-quarter revenue of $21.5 million, a 51% increase over the year-earlier period.

Operating income was $5.4 million versus an operating loss of $2.8 million in the year-ago quarter. The San Jose, Calif.-based digital unit also manages Knight Ridder's partnerships with CareerBuilder and Classified Ventures.

The results were released as a part of both publishers' third-quarter earnings reports.
