By: E&P Staff Knight Ridder continues to show faith in the free model.
The company announced this morning that it has launched a free daily paper to cover California's East Bay -- the area east of the San Francisco Bay that includes Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, Kensington, Albany, and Oakland.
The newest edition comes on the heels of the acquisition of the Daily News Group, a chain of free daily papers distributed in the "peninsula" area, between San Francisco and San Jose. That chain's flagship paper is the Palo Alto Daily News.
"When we purchased the Daily News Group in February, we noted that the business model developed by its founders would translate well to a variety of locations, and I am delighted that we are losing no time in making good on that," said Hilary Schneider, Knight Ridder senior vice president, in a statement. "It's a 'natural' for our brand of free newspapers, and I look forward to rapid success with this undertaking."
Five thousand copies of the East Bay Daily News were delivered today to area stores, offices, restaurants, and coffee shops. Knight Ridder plans to ramp up the circulation to 10,000 in a matter of days, according to a statement. The editorial focuses on local news but also offers regional and national stories.
The East Bay Daily News publishes Monday through Friday under the Daily News Group.
