Knight Ridder Reporter, Photographer Released After Gaza Kidnapping

Posted
By: Joe Strupp A Knight Ridder reporter and a British photographer kidnapped earlier today in the Gaza Strip have been released, a Knight Ridder spokeswoman told E&P.

Lee Ann Schlatter, speaking from Knight Ridder headquarters in San Jose, Calif., said she believed that Dion Nissenbaum, the chain's lone Jerusalem reporter, and British photographer Adam Pletts, had been let go (Earlier Story: American and British Journalists Abducted in Gaza).

"They have been released and we are waiting to make sure they are in a safe place," she said. "We believe they have been turned over, but I don't have anything further at this point."

Knight Ridder Foreign Editor Steve Butler could not be reached for comment on the reported release. Butler had said earlier that the Gaza Strip had become more dangerous in recent months. He said Nissenbaum, a former San Jose Mercury News reporter, had taken the new assignment in July. "There have been a number of incidents in Gaza recently, the incidents of foreigners being grabbed and held for a couple of hours before being released," Butler said. "It has been less-safe [than before]."
