Knight Ridder Reports Ad Revunue Up 6.6% in November

By: E&P Staff Knight Ridder announced today that its total advertising revenue for the month of November increased 6.6% when compared to the same period last year.

National advertising revenue leapt 18.6%. Retail was up 2.6%, and classified grew 7.2%.

By market, total advertising revenue increased in Philadelphia, up 11%, Charlotte, N.C., up 10.5%, Contra Costa, Calif., up 7.9%, Kansas City, up 6.8%, Fort Worth, Texas, up 5.5%, St. Paul, Minn., up 5.3%, and Akron, Ohio, up 2.8%.

San Jose, Calif., and Miami were soft due to declines in national and retail advertising.

The national category made gains, especially in Philadelphia, where it jumped 32.1%. Knight Ridder reported strong advertising schedules from the State of Pennsylvania Treasury and in automotive. Fort Worth and Kansas City also reported increases of 26.6% and 26.5%, respectively, because of heavy advertising by both Sprint and auto manufacturers.

Retail advertising gained the most ground in Columbia, up 12.7%, and Charlotte, up 11.2%.

Classified increased in St. Paul by 15.1%, in Charlotte by 9.7%, and in Contra Costa by 7%.

Circulation revenue took a hit, down 4.2%.
