KNIGHTRIDDER.com DROPS FREE E-MAIL

On Monday, KnightRidder.com is ending the free e-mail service
offered on Real Cities sites. As of the end of February, there
were only 5,000 active accounts, said Pete Casillas, regional
marketing manager for KnightRidder.com.

He contrasted that small number with the millions of unique
visitors to the network, which includes Philly.com, Miami.com,
and Charlotte.com. "We're disappointed to discontinue any of our
services to our customers," Casillas said. But the cost-saving
move will present "the opportunity to rededicate some resources
to new content and services more in line with our core mission."

KnightRidder.com was a little late to the free e-mail game, which
was first offered by sites such as Yahoo! and Hotmail. "We view
free e-mail as a ubiquitous technology," Casillas said. "We were
among the later adopters." The company introduced its free e-mail
service in July 1999.
