By: E&P Staff Variable-data printer Rotomail is relying on its new Kodak Versamark VL4200 to digitally print an international edition of USA Today for Messaggerie Internazionali. The copies of USA Today are distributed to hotels and kiosks in major tourist towns and airports.
"While some laser printing systems provide some remote-printing benefits, they can't produce the newspaper's color pictures and advertisements to a satisfactory standard, unlike the VL4200 which can make light work of most newspapers on the market with its color and duplex printing," Rotomail CEO Giovanni Antonuzzo said in a statement.
The Versamark VL4200 operates at 410 feet per minute at a resolution of 600x360 dpi and comes with a range of productivity features, such as continuous ink replenishment during production.
We've already seen growth of 15% during the first months of this year compared with last year, and with the VL4200 systems helping us to tap into new markets, we anticipate that this trend will continue," Antonuzzo added. "We began with runs of 500 copies a day five days per week, but have now increased daily production to 3000 copies for the summer period."
Each evening, Rotomail receives PDF files of the next day's newspaper pages. Printing the 3000 copies on the Versamark VL4200 takes one hour. Copies are available at kiosks and hotels by 6:00 the following morning.
Rotomail installed two Versamark VL2200 systems last year and recently upgraded to the VL4200. It's plant now has seven Versamark systems, which Antonuzzo said integrate "perfectly with our finishing and data management systems."
