By: E&P Staff KPC Media Group Inc., publisher of three dailies in northeastern Indiana, four weeklies and several niche products, has selected NewsEngin GPS as its next-generation system to create, track and distribute content for its online and print products.
NewsEngin GPS serves as a single starting point for content. When a staff member enters basic information about an assignment (print story, Web element or multimedia file), this information forms the basis for cross-site content planning and sharing. It also automatically refreshes a department's planning budget. Departments or teams can create a range of shared or individual assignment budgets on the fly.
Stories and text elements are written directly in GPS, using a full-featured word processor that requires no browser plug-ins. It provides full versioning and tracking of all changes, in addition to robust record locking and disaster-recovery features. Staff members quickly can package a range of associated content elements. Web and print staffs independently can move elements of a package through the workflow.
Based in Chesterfield, Mo., NewsEngin and KPC's staff also worked together to use GPS to automate many Web-publishing tasks and build an efficient system to replicate stories, photos and other content among physically separate offices.
NewsEngin's system includes XTensions and plug-ins to dynamically exchange content with QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign. Designers can use NewsEngin's drag-and-drop interface to quickly design pages.
The GPS content collection-and-distribution engine delivers to Web sites and handheld devices, allowing a news organization to collect, organize, categorize and repurpose all information that flows into a newsroom. The system can receive stories in any structured format over any standard transmission protocol and deliver stories in any text-based format.
