By: E&P Staff Knight Ridder continues to put its money where its mouth is when promoting diversity in the newsroom as the company announced the winners of its 2004 minority scholarships, totaling over $200,000.

Each of the five high school winners -- nominated by Knight Ridder papers throughout the country -- will receive a $40,000 scholarship payable over four years, four paid internships at Knight Ridder and employment with the company upon completion of college and the program.

"At a time when some companies appear to be hesitating on their commitment to diversity and the future, we are proud to again confidently embrace both through the scholars program," said Tony Ridder, chairman and CEO of Knight Ridder, in a statement.

A panel of Knight Ridder executives selected the following winners who will be honored at a dinner in San Jose, Calif. in early May: Nissa Benjamin (Miramar, Fla.), Ashlee Garrett (Lake Worth, Texas), Eba Hamid (Oxford, Miss.), Rachel Luna (Hercules, Calif.) and Toluse Olorunnipa (Tallahassee, Fla.).

Knight Ridder has been running the scholar program for over 20 years.
