By: Jennifer Saba Knight Ridder has named Karen Stevenson to the newly created position of chief legal officer and assistant to the chairman and CEO, effective Feb. 6.
In her role, Stevenson will help executives with the strategic review of a possible sale of Knight Ridder.
According to a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, Stevenson will have an annual salary of $475,000. If her employment is terminated prior to Dec. 31, 2006, "for any reason other than gross negligence or willful misconduct," Stevenson is eligible to receive a lump sum payout equal to the amount of her base salary.
Stevenson worked for Knight Ridder about four years ago as general counsel.
