KR's Hoyt Wins Top Batten Award

By: E & P Staff Clark Hoyt, Knight Ridder Washington editor, has won the top prize in KR's eighteenth annual James K. Batten Excellence Awards competition. He and other winners will be honored by Chairman and CEO Tony Ridder on Oct. 25 in San Jose. They receive stock options and a total of $45,000 in prize money.

The top prize, the John S. Knight Gold Medal, was awarded to Hoyt who "has been a pillar of Knight Ridder's commitment to outstanding journalism in every one of his 36 years with the company," Ridder said in a statement. "But perhaps in none of them has he been able to contribute more than in his current role as Washington editor. Not coincidentally, as Clark wins the John S. Knight Award, the Washington Bureau is taking home two of five journalism excellence prizes -and its profile in the journalism world has never been higher."

The bureau has reported pivotal stories questioning the quality of American intelligence just before the Iraq War, and other Iraq-related stories that have repeatedly earned praise from E & P and many other news outlets.

Hoyt is also responsible for Knight Ridder's foreign bureaus and put together a team of editors, reporters, photographers and artists from more than a dozen newspapers to cover the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Other KR winners include Cheryl Carpenter, deputy managing editor/news for The Charlotte Observer, who took home the Excellence Award for People Development. Two received Marketing Excellence awards: Bret Miller, major accounts manager at The Kansas City Star, and David Landsberg, vice president/advertising for The Miami Herald.
