By: Steven B. Rossi, a former Knight Ridder Inc. executive, has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer for MediaNews Group Inc., replacing Gerald E. Grilly, who is retiring, the company said Thursday.
Rossi, who will take over from Grilly Sept. 5, was senior vice president and chief financial officer of Knight Ridder. Grilly, who also was chief executive of the California Newspaper Partnership, plans to pursue other goals.
Rossi, 57, will join William Dean Singleton, vice chairman and chief executive, and Joseph Lodovic IV, president, on the MediaNews executive committee.
"Rossi's proven track record as a results-driven newspaper executive and his extensive knowledge of our California newspaper markets and the newspapers we recently acquired make him an ideal choice to lead MediaNews Group as it continues its rapid growth," Singleton said in a statement.
Denver-based MediaNews previously announced a management restructuring of the California Newspaper Partnership in connection with its acquisitions of the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times and The Monterey County Herald.
All had been Knight Ridder newspapers and were acquired by MediaNews after a series of transactions.
MediaNews also announced Eric Grilly, 35, president of MediaNews Group interactive, will become senior vice president of MediaNews Group and will join Singleton, Lodovic and Rossi on the executive committee.
