Kruger Takes Downtime For Upgrades

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg Montreal-based Kruger Inc. shut down its Corner Brook Pulp and Paper mill in Newfoundland for four days last week in order to connect equipment needed to start a $29 million (Canadian) co-generation project. Along with downtime for other improvements over the past few months, newsprint output was reduced by 12,000 metric tons.

The investments will enable Kruger to optimize its use of wood residue in producing steam and electricity at the mill "and are in keeping with Kruger's environmental policy, which favors responsible management of natural resources," said Manufacturing Vice President Michel Vachon.

Kruger agreed to sell Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (HYDRO) 12 megawatts of electricity from the co-generation project.
