By: E&P Staff La Opini?n, the nation's biggest Spanish-language daily newspaper, will mark its 80th anniversary Saturday -- Mexican Independence Day -- after an unusual 80-day promotion.
Every day since June 28, the Los Angeles paper has published a series of historical front-pages from its 80 years, accompanied by a profile of one of 80 southern California figures La Opini?n calls "rising leaders" in the Hispanic community.
On its anniversary date of September 16, the paper will publish a pictorial supplement with photos from its 80-year-old archives.
"This is a tremendous milestone in our company history," says Monica Lozano, CEO and Publisher of La Opini?n and granddaughter of Ignacio E. Lozano who founded the newspaper in 1926. The 123,885-circulation La Opini?n is now owned by ImpreMedia, whose other papers include the daily El Diario La Prensa in New York City and the weekly La Raza in Chicago.
In addition to its daily print editions and the online La Opini?n Digital, the Los Angeles paper publishes a free weekend paper La Opini?n Contigo delivered to 255,000 in ZIP Codes with high rates of Hispanic residents, and Bienes Raices, a weekly real estate book.
