Monica C. Lozano, the publisher of the nation’s largest Spanish-language daily, La Opinion  in Los Angeles, was named CEO of its parent company impreMedia Monday.

Lozano, who was also senior vice president of the company, succeeds John Paton, who earlier this year became CEO of Journal Register Co.

"Monica’s deep experience in media, her broad relationships among key stakeholder groups, and her demonstrated ability to understand the dynamics of our industry and constructively lead an organization towards new growth opportunities made her the best person for the position," said Steve Rader of Clarity Partners. The search committee considered both internal and external candidates and included board members Rader, Bruce Eatroff, Jose Lozano and interim CEO Michael Wortsman,  who elected chairman of the board on Monday.

Lozano joined La Opinion, which was founded by her grandfather in 1926, in 1985. ImpreMedia was formed in 2004 with the purchase of La Opinion and El Diario La Prensa, the New York City daily newspaper. It has since grown to more than 97 products on seven platforms. The company says 31% of all U.S. Hispanic adults use an impreMedia network product. It publishes newspapers in the top seven Hispanic markets, reaching 61% of the U.S. Hispanic population.

Lozano, 53, serves on the boards of two Fortune 50 companies, Bank of America and The Walt Disney Company. President Obama last year named her to the Economic Recovery Advisory Board.
