By: Joe Strupp Describing it as a contest "that honors those who write, speak or blog about one of the nation's most important industries," the Los Angeles Press Club has created a new awards competition for coverage of entertainment.
"The first National Entertainment Journalism Awards contest will honor work by newspaper, broadcast and Internet news people for their efforts in 2007," the club said in a release, adding that the deadline for entries will be Jan. 25, 2008.
The press club has sponsored journalism competitions on a regional level for 50 years, the release stated, but chose this year to create a national competition.
"Through our new NEJ awards, we hope to reach hundreds of entertainment journalists around the country who may not have had a worthy forum to make peers aware of their top-quality work," Press Club President Anthea Raymond, a veteran radio producer, said in a statement. "We're going to honor the rising stars of journalism who cover the rising stars of the entertainment world."
The contest will include separate categories for newspaper reporters and editors, television and radio journalists, and bloggers and other online news organizations. The contest will focus on film, television or music reporting and criticism, the release stated.
Awards will be given for Best Entertainment News Story, Best Feature Story and Critic of the Year in each category. Fees are $35 per entry. The winners will be announced in the week leading up to the Academy Awards on Feb. 24, 2008, at a Press Club party in Hollywood.
"The finalist judges will include former longtime entertainment reporter and columnist Alex Ben Block, who was most recently editor of Television Week and formerly chief of the Hollywood Reporter; Ted Johnson, a Daily Variety reporter who has long covered the entertainment industry; and USA TODAY film critic Claudia Puig," the release added.
