By: Joe Strupp John Carroll, editor and executive vice president of the Los Angeles Times, has been elected chairman of the Pulitzer Prize board, Columbia University announced today. The New York-based university administers the annual awards.

Carroll, 60, first joined the 18-member board in 1994. As the new chairman, he succeeds Louis Boccardi, president and CEO of The Associated Press, who held the position since May and will remain on the board as a member.

"I take it very seriously," Carroll said of his new position. "I am proud of it."

Carroll launched his journalism career in 1963 as a reporter for the then-Providence (R.I.) Journal-Bulletin. He took over as editor of the L.A. Times in 2000 after nine years at The Sun of Baltimore.

The Pulitzer Prize board will announce its choices for its 2002 awards on April 8.
