By: (AP) Rick Wartzman, a writer and editor at
The Wall Street Journal's Los Angeles bureau, has been named business editor of the
Los Angeles Times.
Wartzman, 37, will replace Bill Sing, who becomes senior editor in charge of editing and creating special editorial sections for the
Times.
The appointments become effective in mid-September, the
Times said Tuesday.
In nearly 15 years at the
Journal, Wartzman has covered the steel industry, aerospace, the national economy, Washington lobbying, and the Clinton White House. He edited feature stories for the newspaper and wrote a monthly column.
Wartzman was also the founding editor of the
Journal's weekly California edition and had served as Houston bureau chief. He joined the newspaper in 1987 in its Pittsburgh bureau.
Wartzman has a bachelor of science degree in journalism from Northwestern University.
During his tenure as business editor beginning in 1996, Sing, 44, oversaw the expansion of the
Times' business coverage. The section increased the size of its business staff and won a Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting.
Both Sing and Wartzman will report to Dean Baquet, managing editor.
