'L.A. Times' Names New Foreign, National Editors

By: E&P Staff Bruce Wallace has been named the Los Angeles Times' new foreign editor. He has served as Tokyo bureau chief since 2004.

While Wallace has been based in Japan, during the last four years he made two trips to Iraq to embed with Marines and a British Army unit. He has also reported from Afghanistan. In 2006, aided in the paper?s coverage of the Israeli-Hezbollah war in Lebanon. In Asia, he reported from India, Pakistan, and North Korea.

Roger Smith will become the L.A. Times? national editor, effective Nov. 10. He has served as senior projects editor since 1998.

Since 2001, Smith has overseen several projects of note, among them the Times? 2002 Pulitzer Prize-winning series on the flaws of the Harrier jet, and David Willman?s Pulitzer-winning 2000 story about seven deadly drugs that were approved by the FDA.

Smith succeeds Scott Kraft, who will be taking on a new assignment in mid-November following the 2008 presidential election. Kraft will become a senior editor and roving correspondent, focusing on national and foreign enterprise pieces.

Ashley Dunn has been named deputy editor for the national staff. Dunn, who has served as science editor since 2002, joined the newsroom in 1986 as a suburban reporter in the San Gabriel Valley and then moved to Metro.

He left to join the New York Times as a Metro reporter, but returned to the Los Angeles Times as a business reporter and later became deputy editor of Tech Times, a weekly section on personal technology.
