By: Dexter Hill The American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors (AASFE) has announced the winners of its 19th Annual Excellence-in-Feature-Writing Contest and has selected its Top 20 Feature Sections of 2008. The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times racked up 10 awards and two honorable mentions in the writing contest, and the Los Angeles Times will take away seven awards from both competitions.
Newspaper submissions from the United States and Canada were divided into four divisions for judging based on daily circulation figures.
First-place winners in the General Feature category include ?Grandmother, Gardener, Felon,? by Carrie Macmillan of The Republican-American in Waterbury, Conn.; ?The No-Hand King? by Josh Shaffer of The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.; ?Dismemberment? by the St. Petersburg Times? Thomas Lake, and ?Pearls before breakfast? by The Washington Post?s Gene Weingarten. Each receives $1,000.
A $500 prize went to to first-place winners of each division in the remaining categories: Narrative Feature, Short Feature, General Commentary, Feature Specialty Reporting, A&E Commentary, Headline Writing, and A&E Feature. The Hartford (Conn.) Courant, Las Vegas Review-Journal, and The Baltimore Sun are among the papers with two winning submissions in these categories.
Among the winning newspapers in the Best Features Sections competition were the Appleton (Wis.) Post-Crescent; The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.; The Charlotte Observer, and The Washington Post. Also making the list were The Quad City Times, Davenport, Iowa, The Buffalo (N.Y.) News, The Miami Herald, and the Chicago Tribune.
Finalists of both competitions will be honored at an awards luncheon during the AASFE?s annual conference next week in Houston. The ceremony will be preceeded by a talk from best-selling author Chitra Divakaruni.
