By: E&P Staff The Los Angeles Times and the New Orleans Times-Picayune have both won this year's John B. Oakes Award for environmental reporting. Both winning stories were print series accompanied by multimedia packages.
Judy Pasternak?s four-part series "Blighted Homeland" for the L.A. Times focused on the lingering effects of uranium mining on the Utah/Arizona border. Residents of the Navajo reservation there have experienced health problems, including cancer due to radioactivity left over from the mining.

Bob Marshall, Mark Schleifstein, and Matt Brown wrote the three-day, three-part series "Last Chance: The Fight to Save a Disappearing Coast." Dan Swenson created an interactive map online showing what the actual coastline looks like today and how it's receded.
