By: E&P Staff Los Angeles Times Editor John Carroll sent a memo to staffers (posted at Romenesko on poynter.org) saying the paper would soon offer a voluntary buyout, which, depending on the number of takers, may be followed by an involuntary layoff.
The downsizing is part of a Tribune Co. cost-cutting initiative announced Monday. The Chicago-based company plans to cut 200 jobs (about 1% of the workforce) in its publishing division.
"It is our job to see that this proves to be a relatively minor event in the long-term building of a first-rate newspaper," Carroll wrote. "In my four years here, we have been blessed with smooth sailing, which has allowed us to build rapidly. Our peers have not been so fortunate. ... My goal for the Los Angeles Times (
