By: E&P Staff Karen Young, reader representative for The Hartford (Conn.) Courant, announced her departure from the paper -- and the end of the position -- on Sunday in a column in the paper. It opened: "I am not one for long goodbyes. So in short, this is my last column as The Courant's reader representative. Along with 23 others in the newsroom, I am being laid off; another 33 chose to take a buyout.
"My personal situation aside, July 31, my last day with the newspaper, will mark the end of an era. The Courant will no longer have a reader representative." The newspaper introduced its first reader representative, Henry McNulty, in 1984.
