By: The American Press newspaper of Lake Charles has resumed publishing printed editions for the first time since Hurricane Rita came ashore near the southwestern Louisiana city nearly a week ago.
Managing editor Bobby Dower said the American Press used the printing plant of The Daily Advertiser in Lafayette on Thursday to print its first 10,000 copies since the storm.
Those 12-page editions were trucked to Lake Charles and distributed free at sites such as area Wal-Mart stores and the FEMA distribution point in Jennings, Welsh, Lake Charles, Westlake and Sulphur.
The newspaper printed 15,000 copies Friday and planned to be at 20,000 by the time its Sunday editions are printed, Dower said.
The news staff has been spread from Dallas to Tuscaloosa, Ala., in the past week, Dower said.
"We have had a couple of reporters in Lake Charles for the past three days, but conditions remain Spartan there," Dower said.
"Our plant still has no electricity and our distribution center needs a new roof. We have already patched a hole in the roof in our cafeteria, which was located adjacent to our newsroom," Dower said. "God willing, when we get electricity we'll move our operations home."
