John A. Kirkpatrick III was in the stands at Candlestick Park on Oct. 17, 1989, when a powerful earthquake rocked the stadium, delaying the World Series and sending the San Francisco Bay Area into chaos.
Kirkpatrick, then an editor at the
San Francisco Examiner, huddled with other newspaper staff members who were at the game, to quickly figure out how to cover the scene inside Candlestick.
