Lancaster Paper Will End Saturday Edition

By: The Saturday afternoon edition of the Lancaster New Era will be eliminated next year.

Lancaster Newspapers Inc. said it will be replaced with a combined Saturday morning edition of the New Era and the Intelligencer Journal.

Harold E. Miller, the company's president and chief executive, said the moves would probably happen at the end of the first quarter of 2008.

The combined Saturday edition will include all the features now in the Saturday Intelligencer Journal, along with a New Era editorial page and comics. Other New Era features also will be a part of the new package.

The size of the New Era staff is being reduced to reflect the newspaper's new five-day publication cycle, but the company said that will come almost entirely from attrition and early retirements.

``We anticipate there will be a very slight reduction in the end of the five-month period,'' Miller said.
