By: Jennifer Saba The Los Angeles Newspaper Group is the latest company that plans to distribute entertainment based CD-ROMs from iMedia International.
The CD-ROMs feature movie previews, interviews with actors, red carpet coverage as well as video game and music content (readers can download free songs.)
?Hollywood Previews is an excellent new entertainment value for our readers and advertisers,? Douglas Hanes, senior vice president of advertising and marketing for LANG, said in a statement. ?From a readership perspective, it provides a new interactive experience featuring movie previews, DVD releases, music, and Hollywood trivia. Strategically, we?re excited about the possibility of reaching new advertisers through this interactive medium.?
The individual papers in LANG that plan to distribute the CD-ROMs are the Los Angeles Daily News, Press Telegram in Long Beach, San Bernardino Sun, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star News, Whittier Daily News, Redlands Daily Facts, and the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.
LANG joins The Dallas Morning News and the Daily News in New York -- two other papers that have signed on with iMedia.
The CD-ROMs, mainly distributed in the Sunday paper, not only carries a lot of content -- the average viewing time is 22 minutes -- but advertising as well.
The Dallas Morning News, which has been distributing the CD-ROMs since April 30, has seen some advertising success with the product. Blockbuster is a new account for the paper, thanks to the CD-ROM.
But Jeff Kuerzi, senior director for national and major retail at the Morning News, said in an interview that it was more difficult to sell-in national advertising because it was only a one-market buy. ?So far the number of advertisers has been relatively local,? he said. ?Advertisers are happy with results.?
IMedia plans to build out a national network for advertisers. The newspaper and iMedia split the advertising revenue after the cost of the CD-ROM is covered, about 35 cents per disc.
?Securing distribution in New York and Los Angeles gives us immediate access to sponsor?s national advertising budgets, which is the key component to our success,? Henry Williamson, president of newspaper syndication for iMedia, said in a statement. ?Los Angeles and New York are the two largest advertising and media markets in the U.S. and are the cornerstones to our evolving national syndication program.?
