By: E&P Staff David B. Lindsay Jr., the last of his family to own the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune, has died at age 86, the paper reported late Monday.

Lindsay was a third generation member of the family who founded the paper as the Sarasota Herald in 1925. He was publisher of the paper for 30 years before selling it to The New York Times Co. for a reported $86 million in 1982.

In the Herald-Tribune obituary by Anthony Cormier and Mark Zaloudek, Lindsay was remembered as a "quiet but influential voice in local affairs" who was one of the few publishers at the time to refuse cigarette advertisements.

Details of survivors, services and burial were not immediately available.
