By: E&P Staff How's this for a tribute to a cartoonist? A lodge being built at the Fort Baker area near the Golden Gate Bridge will include a "Farley Bar" displaying the art of late "Farley" creator Phil Frank.
The cartoonist, who died last September of brain cancer, did the syndicated "Travels With Farley" from 1975 to 1985 before turning the comic into the local "Farley" for the last 22 years of his life. The daily strip ran in the San Francisco Chronicle.
In a Chronicle piece posted on SFGate.com, Leah Garchik also reported that Frank helped the developers of "Cavallo Point, the Lodge at the Golden Gate" with information about the site and its buildings. (The lodge will combine restoration with new construction.) Frank was a local historian who often hiked around the Fort Baker area.
The news about Frank -- who also co-authored "The Elderberries" comic for Universal Press Syndicate -- was mentioned today on
Tom Spurgeon's Comics Reporter blog.
