Late 'Farley' Cartoonist Will Be Focus of Museum Retrospective

By: E&P Staff An exhibit called "Farley's San Francisco Chronicles: A Salute to Phil Frank" will be held from April 6 to Sept. 14 at the Cartoon Art Museum (CAM) of San Francisco.

Frank, who died last September of brain cancer, did the syndicated "Travels With Farley" from 1975 to 1985 before turning the comic into the local "Farley" for the last 22 years of his life. The daily strip ran in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The CAM retrospective will also include originals of Frank's non-"Farley" work, including "The Elderberries" comic distributed by Universal Press Syndicate, cartoons for "Road and Track" magazine, and his college strip "Frankly Speaking."

Frank was a resident of Sausalito, Calif.

His widow, Susan, wrote guidebooks for four national parks (Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Muir Woods) that Phil illustrated. The series will be reissued by Avalon Publishers this year, according to CAM.
