By: Dexter Hill The Boston Herald has sided with Sen. John McCain and The Repository in Canton, Ohio, has chosen Sen. Barack Obama in the latest round of editorial endorsements in the presidential race.
The Herald, which made its announcement Wednesday, called McCain the candidate with ?already proven leadership skills,? and claimed that Obama would need ?on-the-job training? if elected President. The endorsement also approved of McCain?s economic policies -- particularly his focus on cutting Congressional spending.
The Boston daily also supported the Republican candidate?s stance on foreign policy. ?When Russian troops invaded the sovereign democratic nation of Georgia, it took Obama three full days to figure it all out. Not so McCain, who immediately pinned the aggressor label on Russia,? the endorsement read.
In Ohio, the Repository weighed in on Sunday, supporting Sen. Obama. The editorial cited Obama?s opposition to the war in Iraq in 2002 and his middle class-oriented domestic policies as much-needed changes in Washington.
?We believe that Obama's intellect, caution, levelheadedness and calm demeanor make him better suited to lead a nation that must respond to many unwelcome changes with yet more change,? the endorsement read.
Citing the recent crisis on Wall Street, the Repository praised Obama for his support of a bipartisan bail-out plan and criticized McCain for his actions last week. ?McCain has indulged his penchant for drama,? the editorial read. ?He abruptly refused to debate Obama on Friday ? at a time when Americans need to hear directly from both men about their reaction to the financial crisis."
