By: E&P Staff Latimes.com, the Web site of the Los Angeles Times, set an all-time record in July with 127 million page views.
"We can?t say the summers are slow anymore," Executive Editor/Interactive Meredith Artley wrote in a memo. The Times Web site surpassed its previous record for page views (120 million), set in May. The site received 19 million unique users, another milestone.
"We were on track to break that May record by a few million page views, and then the earthquake happened, pushing us even further ahead," said Artley, referring to the 5.4-magnitude quake that hit Southern California on July 29.
Other notable feature that drove traffic, Artley said, was the launch of a new science-fiction blog called Hero Complex, which provided readers with coverage of the recent San Diego Comic-Con. Artley also singled out "Big Burn," the Times' recent five-part series on the growing California wildfires.
According to Artley, the Times' most-viewed blog was Top of the Ticket, written by political writers Don Frederick and Andrew Malcolm, with more than 1.8 million page views.
"We?re using technology and the Web at large to spread our journalism far and wide," Artley added. "Latimes.com keeps getting better at SEO (search engine optimization), which means our stories are ranking higher in Google and other search engines. We are also performing better on sites like Digg.com. All that adds up to more exposure and more readership than ever before."
