By: E&P Staff In an interview on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday, Laura Bush criticized the media for not highlighting her husband's popularity when it was high and now "enjoying" the fact that it has plunged.
In a separate interview she questioned the polls that reveal that plunge.
On Fox News, she said she didn't think people were losing confidence in President George W. Bush and challenged the accuracy of recent polls, which chart his approval rating at anywhere from 29% to 35%. "I don't really believe those polls. I travel around the country. I see people, I see their responses to my husband. I see their response to me," she said. "What we're seeing with these poll numbers is a lot of fun in the press," she said.
On ABC, she blamed any signs of unpopularity on the Iraq war and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina -- both of which critics claim represent failures for her husband. But Laura Bush said, "We've had a very, very difficult year, starting with the hurricane last September, but already because of the terrorist attack in 2001 and then the war on terror since then. ... He's the one that has to make the hard decisions. And, of course, they don't please everyone."
She also complained that when her husband's popularity was high, newspapers did not put that on the front page. Asked if she thought the media had been unfair, Mrs. Bush said: "No, I don't think it's necessarily unfair. I think it's just, you know, I think they may be enjoying this a little bit."
