Yahoo today announced the promotion of Lauren Johnston to executive editor of Yahoo News, U.S. Johnston will lead Yahoo’s team of journalists across news, entertainment and lifestyle, while overseeing the creation and implementation of the strategy for original content to expand into new audience segments and deepen engagement.

“Lauren Johnston has spent the last two decades building newsroom solutions from scratch,” said Kat Downs Mulder, SVP and general manager, Yahoo News. “At Yahoo she’s been instrumental, working across editorial, engineering and product to develop explanatory work, connecting news consumers with formats that fit their lives. We’re thrilled to have her at the helm as executive editor.”

Johnston joined Yahoo nine years ago, initially building a team to cover high-impact stories as head of breaking news and implementing a 24/7 breaking news desk across U.S. and international teams. Most recently Johnston was head of programming, overseeing editorial planning, content curation and distribution. She also spearheaded audience growth for Yahoo + Aol homepages and Yahoo News across web, app, newsletters and social channels, including the Yahoo News TikTok, which hit one million followers within its first year. During that time Johnston also developed and launched “The 360,” a unique Yahoo News series that breaks down big issues and debates and surfaces multiple views and perspectives on important news stories.

Johnston said: “It’s been an honor and a pleasure to work alongside our talented editorial teams through some of the most high-impact news moments of the past decade, and I’m delighted to take the helm as executive editor, to shape Yahoo News’ original content strategy and our next generation of news products.”

Johnston joined Yahoo in 2014 from the New York Daily News, where she led the digital side of the newsroom as editorial director and co-founded an innovation lab which brought early stage startups focused on journalism into the newsroom. Prior to her roles at Yahoo, she spent nearly a decade working as a multimedia reporter and editor in New York City local newsrooms, winning awards from the New York State Associated Press Association, the Newswomen’s Club of New York and the top prize in a New York GEN Editors Lab hackathon.
