Layoffs Again Hit the Editorial Cartooning Profession

Posted
By: Dave Astor It looks like two more creators have joined the huge group of staff editorial cartoonists who've lost their jobs in recent years.

Daily Cartoonist blogger Alan Gardner reported that The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun laid off Jake Fuller, who Gardner said has been with the newspaper since 1992 and its full-time cartoonist since 1997.

E&P yesterday left two voice-mail messages with Fuller that were not returned. Sun Editorial Page Editor Ron Cunningham was also phoned twice yesterday and, when reached on the second call, declined to comment while referring E&P to Sun Publisher Jim Doughton. Doughton was then phoned yesterday as well, and did not return the call.

The other editorial cartoonist laid off was Dave Granlund of the MetroWest Daily News in Framingham, Mass., reported the Boston Herald's Jessica Heslam. He had been with the Daily News for 31 years.

"I was let go because of the money aspect of it,? Granlund told Heslam. "This came out of left field. This was unexpected."

There are an estimated 85 staff editorial cartoonists remaining in the U.S. -- down from more than 200 two decades ago.
