A number of top leadership changes are being announced at The News-Gazette, Inc., of Champaign, Ill.
John Reed, currently the company’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, has been named publisher of the paper and chief executive officer of the corporation. Reed, a member of The News-Gazette’s executive team since 2008, is a former publisher of the Danville Commercial News.
Jim Rossow is being named editor of The News-Gazette. For the last year, he has held the title of executive editor. Previously, he served 18 years as the paper’s sports editor.
The roles of editor and publisher currently are held by John Foreman. He will remain as president of the corporation and continue to serve on the newspaper’s board of directors.
“These changes transition us well into the future,” Foreman said. “The opportunity to tap top young industry talent like John Reed and Jim Rossow is rare. They share a unique vision of the rapidly changing media world and a tremendous commitment to quality news products of all forms.”
“Apart from his deep knowledge of business matters, John Reed has substantial experience in general management experience and a particular grasp of the growing digital side of our business. In his time here, he has played leadership roles in development of IlliniHQ.com, in extensive improvements to news-gazette.com and in creation of websites for all our weekly newspapers. Most recently, he spearheaded creation of the elaborate responsive design that allows excellent access to our websites on tablets and smart phones.”
“This is an incredible leadership team,” Budig observed. “The News-Gazette, its media affiliates and the community are well served.”
"The opportunity for a transition like this is rare in any industry," Hecker said. "It further demonstrates this company's rootedness in East Central Illinois. These are local people running local newspapers and radio stations. You don't find that very many places," Hecker said.
Foreman has served with the company more than 37 years. He was named editor in 1985, publisher in 2003 and president one year later.
