By: E&P Staff A cartoon by Jeff Danziger of the New York Times Syndicate has drawn criticism from critics who claim it is racially charged.
The cartoon, with the caption "Senator DeMint (R-SC) Can't Wait to Kill Healthcare," shows Republican Senator Jim DeMint perched on a balcony carrying a high-powered rifle, while a pajama-clad elephant on the floor below says "Metaphorically, Jim, for God's sake!"
The cartoon comes in the wake of comments made by DeMint regarding President Barack Obama's proposed health care reform bill. "If we?re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo," DeMint said last week. "It will break him."
Critics claim the cartoon is evocative of photos taken after Martin Luther King's assassination at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn. in 1968. Danzinger has not made any official comment about the cartoon.
