With less than an hour of trading to go, newspaper sector stocks -- which in recent weeks have steadily slipped from the 52-week highs they established early in spring --  regained ground Thursday as the wider market rallied on good news from China and tech stocks.

The McClatchy Co. (NYSE: MNI) led the newspaper rally gaining nearly 15% approaching the close on an 62-cent gain to $4.80. Trading in MNI was heavy, although volumes for other sector stocks were close to normal.

E.W. Scripps Co. (NYSE: SSP) was up 7.4% in late trading, a gain of 61 cents to $8.82.

S&P 500 stock Gannett Co. (NSYE: GCI) rose 80 cents, or 5.4%, to $15.71 in the closing hour of trading. At its current price, GCI is about $5 a share lower than its 52-week high of $19.69 set April 16. Its 52-week low of  $3.10 was set last July 10.
