Lee Ad Revenue Down in July

By: E&P Staff Lee Enterprises reported today that advertising revenue slipped 1.1% in July compared to the same period a year ago.

Excluding the impact of acquisitions and divestitures made in the current or prior year, retail advertising dropped 2.6%. National advertising plummeted 22%. Classified advertising declined 1.6%. Within the classified category, employment grew 2%, real estate increased 1.3%, automotive decreased 4.3%, and other was down 3.2%.

Online advertising grew 48.4%. Niche publication advertising rose 9.6%.

Circulation revenue was down 1.3%.

For its Pulitzer properties, advertising revenue decreased 0.7% with total revenue down 0.6%. In St. Louis, advertising revenue declined 2.2% and total revenue dropped 2%.

Lee noted that July 2006 had an ?unfavorable exchange day.? July 2005 included an additional Friday, typically a strong revenue day. This year, the additional day included an extra Monday, one of the industry?s weakest advertising days.
