By: E&P Staff Seventeen newspapers recently signed orders for new punch-bend equipment and press-registration locks from Glunz & Jensen K&F, Granger, Indiana.

Lee Enterprises led the way by inking a deal late last month for Glunz & Jensen K&F to upgrade prepress operations later this summer at The Missoulian and Billings Gazette, both in Montana, The Rapid City (S.D.) Journal, Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune, The Times News, Twin Falls, Idaho, The Post-Star, Glen Falls, N.Y., and The Southern Illinoisan, in Carbondale. The new lines will feature the three-point contact Precision Edge punch-bender, straight conveyors, multi-directional UTM conveyors and plate stackers. Each of the seven plate production lines is custom configured to maximize efficiency.

Lee affiliate Capital Newspapers, Madison Wis., (formerly Madison Newspapers Inc.) also bought a Precision Edge, stacker and UTM, along with 164 Glunz & Jensen K&F Wide-Gap No-Tool stainless steel press-registration lockups to complete a web-width reduction on its Goss Metro press from 48 inches to 46 inches. Glunz & Jensen K&F's service technicians also will retrofit existing K&F punch-bend equipment to accept the new web size.

The patent-pending Wide-Gap lock, introduced in spring, is designed for durability and fast installation. Capitol Newspapers will complete its installation this fall.

The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, purchased 320 slots of Wide-Gap No-Tool press registration locks, a ProVision Alliance punch bender, and retrofit kits for an existing Glunz & Jensen K&F punch-bender. The Pilot will convert its Goss Metro press to 48 inches in the winter.
