Lee Reports Soft Ad Revenue

By: E&P Staff Lee Enterprises reported today that same property ad revenue in February was up slightly 0.5% compared to the same period a year ago.

Excluding acquisitions and divestitures made in the current or prior year, retail ad revenue slipped 0.5%. National revenue dropped 12.4%. Classified revenue was almost flat, down 0.1%. Within that category, employment was up 10.6%. Real estate and automotive was down 0.8% and 11.3%, respectively.

Online ad revenue jumped 40%. Niche publication ad revenue increased 16.9%. Circulation revenue dropped 1.7%.

Including the effect of acquisitions and divestitures, total advertising revenue grew 66.4%, due primarily to a Pulitzer deal in June 2005.

For the reporting period ending Feb. 26, Pulitzer advertising revenue dropped 2.6%, with total revenue down 2.1%. In St. Louis, ad revenue declined 4.3% and total revenue was down 3.3%. In other former Pulitzer newspapers, ad revenue was up 1.4% and total revenue increased slightly 0.8%.
