By: E&P Staff "The Other Coast" today took a well-executed swipe at the many comics that are still syndicated even though their original creators are dead.
In Adrian Raeside's Wednesday
comic, his Vicky and Toulouse characters are shown reading the newspaper. Vicky says in the first panel: "'Mary Worth' is a great strip. I'd love to meet its creator." Toulouse replies: "He died years ago."
Vicky says in the second panel: "'Blondie' is funny. I'd love to meet that strip's creator." Toulouse: "Passed on. Extinct."
In the third panel, Vicky says: "What about 'Dick Tracy'? I bet his creator would be a fascinating guy." Toulouse: "Gone to the great inkwell in the sky."
Vicky concludes the strip with this fourth-panel thought balloon: "Reading the comics these days is like reading the obituaries."
"The Other Coast" is distributed by Creators Syndicate, "Dick Tracy" by Tribune Media Services, and "Blondie" and "Mary Worth" by King Features Syndicate.
